Sony COMPACT CASSETTE, cassette and packaging

Sony had called cassette tapes “Magazine Tape,” but with this product it began using their original name, “COMPACT CASSETTE.” There were no major changes to the product’s specifications, and this model also used the “Auto-Sensor” specification. The packaging followed the design of the later “Magazine Tape,” but the cassette’s own label was now color coded by recording time, just like the packaging. A 120-minute version was newly added to the range.

K

A cassette in a colorful, compact slim case. Normal Position. Released in 1971.

30 minutes - ¥380 / 60 minutes - ¥550 / 90 minutes - ¥850 / 120 minutes - ¥1150.

Sony K, closed and open case and spine

This was the “COMPACT CASSETTE” version supplied in a plastic case. The cassette was placed inside a case that opened like a book cover, then snapped shut. The thickest part of the cassette protruded through part of the case surface, making the stored dimensions almost the same as the cassette itself: an extremely slim construction. It still provided the necessary functions, including protection of the tape surface and hub stoppers. The case came in vivid colors according to recording time and featured an embossed “SONY” mark.
