AR
The power of Non-Pore: a new sonic experience through higher recording density
ACOUSTIC RESPONSE
First generation: 1984
C46: 480 yen.
The first generation appeared in 1984, using 100% NP Ferric. Powerful, tight bass. A new sonic experience with every sound particle distinct across the range. It featured shell sections 35% more rigid, New DB Sheet for improved transport stability and the exceptionally precise SP-X mechanism.
AR: explanatory notes
AR stands for Acoustic Response. This high-performance Normal cassette first appeared in 1984.
AR’s main feature was Non-Pore magnetic material, abbreviated NP. The new manufacturing process for NP Ferric completely eliminated voids, or pores, forming inside magnetic particles during production. Dense, highly crystalline magnetic material with well-defined particle shapes greatly increased magnetic energy. Low-frequency MOL was the highest among TDK Normal tapes, and dynamic range expanded. Low- and mid-frequency power approached Metal. Its character combined Normal’s rich low and middle frequencies with clear, extended treble and an impressive overall sound.
AR replaced OD as TDK’s best Normal cassette. Although AR-X with AVILYN briefly took the top position in 1985, AR continued through successive generations as a high-grade Normal cassette until the late 1990s.
Second generation: 1985
C46: 500 yen.
The second generation was released in 1985. Its packaging blue became slightly lighter. The shell used the SP-X mechanism, with a metallic-looking Sound Stabilizer Sheet covering the shell surfaces to suppress resonance.
The substantially redesigned shell sections matched the contemporary SA, SA-X and AR-X, but differed in color.
Third generation: 1986
C46: 500 yen.
The third generation appeared in 1986. Still finer NP Ferric particles were densely packed. Maximum remanent flux density became the highest among TDK Normal cassettes, and dynamic range expanded by 1-1.5 dB. The shell adopted the SPR mechanism with an H-shaped window and multifaceted joints. Its appearance changed substantially too.
Fourth generation: 1988
C46: 500 yen.
The fourth generation arrived in 1988. New Non-Pore AVILYN magnetic material brought maximum remanent flux density to 1,800 gauss. The new HP・AR mechanism, with an integrally molded dual-layer window, and an exceptionally smooth tape surface greatly reduced modulation noise.
Fifth generation: 1990
C46: 480 yen at introduction.
The fifth generation appeared in 1990 under the slogan Strong Sound. Non-Pore AVILYN was coated more densely still. Low-frequency MOL matched Metal tape, while high-frequency MOL also improved. The shell featured the HP・AR mechanism with an integrally molded three-layer window and precision components.
Sixth generation: 1991
C46: 530 yen.
The sixth generation arrived in 1991 with The Position concept: select tape position to match the music. This model represented Normal as Normal with thunderous deep bass. Its packaging also matched SA and MA, differing in color.
Seventh generation: 1993
C46: 530 yen.
The seventh generation was released in 1993, updated alongside SA and MA. Its rigid, low-resonance AR・RC II mechanism joined integrally molded dual-layer shell sections using both screws and ultrasonic welding. Vocal music was recommended: pop and rock, kayokyoku.
Eighth generation: 1994
C46: 470 yen.
The eighth generation appeared in 1994, again updated alongside SA and MA. Its slogan was High performance for component systems. The Normal. Its suitable sound was described as vocal, with rock and pop recommended. No further updates followed, making this the final version.
AR-X
A higher-grade Normal model using AVILYN
ACOUSTIC RESPONSE EXTRA
First generation: 1985
C46: 580 yen.
The first generation appeared in 1985. Densely applied AVILYN provided the best MOL among TDK Normal cassettes. It used the SP-X mechanism, precise shell sections with increased rigidity, and a Sound Stabilizer Sheet covering the entire label area to suppress vibration.
AR-X: explanatory notes
Positioned above AR, this cassette used AVILYN high-density-recording magnetic material, as found in SA and other models, tuned for Normal.
AVILYN’s coercivity can be freely controlled, so it was adjusted to work at Normal bias.
For AR-X, AVILYN production was revised and packing in the coating maximized. Low-frequency MOL reached 6 dB, matching Metal tapes. High-frequency performance became the best among Normal cassettes while noise was also reduced. From the second generation, dual-layer AVILYN, Dual Coating, further improved the tape’s capabilities.
Priced almost the same as SA, it was perceived as SA’s Normal version. On introduction, it might have been considered an improved AD-X or its successor, since that Normal cassette also used AVILYN. AR-X subsequently adopted dual-layer coating, while AD-X received Non-Pore AVILYN, distinguishing them. Both remained on sale: AR-X as a Normal version of SA, AD-X as a Normal version of SR.
Second generation: 1987
C46: 600 yen.
The second generation appeared in 1987. Dual-layer AVILYN provided the highest magnetic energy among TDK Normal cassettes. Dynamic range was 0.5-1.5 dB wider than its predecessor. The SP・AR mechanism, with a wide window and integrally molded dual-layer shell sections, reduced modulation noise.
Third generation: 1990
C46: 530 yen.
The third generation arrived in 1990. Black and gold packaging conveyed a premium impression. Two Normal AVILYN layers, with upper and lower characteristics optimized separately, provided power comparable to Metal. It used the New SP・AR mechanism with integrally molded dual-layer shell sections.
AE
A new basic cassette continuing the D lineage
ACOUSTIC EXCELLENCE
First generation: 1986
C46: 370 yen.
The first generation appeared in 1986. Compared with DS, high-frequency sensitivity rose by 0.5-1 dB and dynamic range widened by 1.5 dB. Its performance was more than adequate for meeting recordings. Transparent RC mechanism shell sections had a smoky tint, and four replaceable labels were provided. Seven playing times ranged from C10 to C120.
AE: explanatory notes
First introduced in 1986 as TDK’s standard basic-grade cassette, AE replaced DS, the effective successor to D. Its transparent shell also emphasized continuity with DS.
AE stands for Acoustic Excellence. Its arrival renamed the earlier D basic range, making the names of all TDK Normal cassettes, AR, AD and AE, start with A for Acoustic. This formed the A Series.
The first generation used new ultrafine Pure Grained Ferric magnetic material, improving high-frequency sensitivity and reducing noise.
Beyond tape performance, the transparent shell inherited from DS was an advantage: the remaining tape was easy to see, useful when recording meetings, for example. Playing times from C10 and C16 to C120 suited many situations. It served well as a practical, all-purpose standard cassette for meetings, study, karaoke, CD recording and other tasks, easy and reliable to use in any recorder.
AE had six generations. The last remained on sale into the 2010s, making it the final TDK cassette still available.
Second generation: 1988
C46: 350 yen.
The second generation was released in 1988. A rounded case was introduced, and packaging became calmer than before. It used the precise, reliable HP mechanism, with transparent shell sections and a lens window. A C150 using newly reinforced tape material was added in 1992.
Third generation: 1994
C46: 290 yen.
The third generation arrived in 1994, the first update in six years. Improved magnetic material raised output and sensitivity across the frequency range. The tape base was replaced with a more deformation-resistant material. A short leader supported auto-reverse operation. Classification stickers made recorded contents immediately identifiable.
Fourth generation: 1996
C46: 290 yen.
The fourth generation appeared in 1996. Output performance improved across the frequency range and dynamic range widened. Rigid PR・C shell sections were joined by ultrasonic welding. Toughness Tape withstood repeated, extended use. The plastic case became slim.
Fifth generation: 1998
C46: 290 yen.
The fifth generation was released in 1998. Apart from new packaging, it appears to have been only a minor update to its predecessor.
Sixth generation: 2003
The sixth AE generation was its final version. Tape and components were now made overseas. It eventually remained TDK’s only cassette and was sold into the 2010s.

if
1987
C46: open price.
if: explanatory notes
This fashion cassette was released in 1987 for a young audience.
It used the unusual rounded plastic Fit Case, intended not to scratch neighboring small items in a bag or catch on them when removed.
Two colors were offered, white and black. The cassette itself matched third-generation AR with its wide H-shaped window, but the shell sections had special colors. The white version was particularly distinctive: a white shell with pink hubs inside made it look like an entirely different cassette.
AD Type1 / AD1
The final series of the long-established AD music cassette
ACOUSTIC DYNAMIC 1
First generation: 1995
C46: 430 yen.
The first generation appeared in 1995 under the slogan Let the music sound dynamic. It used new rigid Pure Response Half shell sections and a short leader.
Second generation: 1996
C46: 480 yen.
The second generation arrived in 1996. Type disappeared from the name, leaving AD1. Its theme was Hear the soul of music. It used a transparent impact-resistant shell and short leader.
Third generation: 1997
C46: 480 yen.
The final generation appeared in 1997: AD1 sounds dynamic thanks to construction for high-quality sound. Released in AD’s twentieth-anniversary year, this was its last generation.
AD Type1 / AD1: explanatory notes
Since its introduction in 1977, AD had long been one of TDK’s main Normal cassette brands. In 1995, under the Everything for music concept, it split into Normal and High Position versions.
AD Type1 was the Normal version and could thus be called AD’s direct heir.
The final AD series had three generations. Ironically, the third, released in 1997 to mark the original AD’s twentieth anniversary, became the last AD.
By this model’s arrival, the higher-grade AR and AD-X were no longer being updated. It therefore became the last high-grade TDK Normal cassette to continue through successive generations.
