DENON Digital Audio Vol.19 April 1992 - cover

A 12-page booklet, a themed DENON catalog dedicated entirely to CD players, dated April 1992. The headline technology of the lineup is リアル20bit Λ (Lambda) S.L.C: two 20-bit DACs run in parallel with opposite signal offsets, their analog outputs are summed, and the conversion error at the zero crossing of one DAC is cancelled by the error of the other. Eight models inside: the flagship DCD-3500RG in a wooden cabinet with a gold front at ¥248,000, the special DCD-1650GL Special Limited Edition with a balanced XLR output at ¥99,000, the DCD-1650(G) and the black DCD-1650 at ¥89,800 each, the DCD-1550G-N and DCD-1550-K at ¥79,800 each, the DCD-970 at ¥49,800, and the only model without the Λ marking, the DCD-770 at ¥32,800. On the technology spread DENON openly defends the multi-bit architecture against the then-fashionable 1-bit Sigma-Delta - “in a multi-bit DAC the quantization noise is uniformly distributed across frequency, no steep analog filter is required, and the phase response is not degraded”.
