THX is a system of audio standards and certification developed in the early 1980s at Lucasfilm by audio engineer and scientist Tomlinson Holman, initiated by George Lucas to ensure consistently high-quality sound reproduction in cinemas; the name THX is commonly linked both to the phrase “Tomlinson Holman’s eXperiment” and to Lucas’s film THX 1138, and the system was first introduced to the public with the release of Return of the Jedi in 1983.
