A fold-out booklet with a complex fold, covering Technics cassette decks, open-reel decks and tape, the fourth issue of the series: both the tape and the decks declare Metal. The new XAII cassette sits above chrome, beside pure-iron MX, and the spreads go to an opened tape path, direct drive, and a computer search across 20 tracks. The top of the cassette line is the RS-M95, the top of the open-reel line is the U-76 at ¥950,000. A separate spread is given to microphones and remote controls for the open-reel decks.

The new magnetic material with high-density recording capability achieves beautiful sound quality with excellent characteristics. The residual magnetic flux density and coercive force, which indicate a tape's recording capability, are both about twice those of conventional XAII tape. Because the maximum output level (MOL) is high, distortion is unlikely even at peak levels and a wide dynamic range is obtained. The improvement in MOL is especially marked in the highs, achieving a frequency response that stays flat up to the highs even in high-level recording. This makes high-fidelity recording with little distortion and muddiness possible. |
