The reason lies in the new high-density recording EE tape. EE tape has raised the excellent inherent characteristics of open reel to twice the conventional level. As a result, open reel has reached a high degree of perfection as a master recording system. It can fully respond to improvements in recording source quality, such as PCM-converted FM broadcasts, digital recording of records and direct cutting. So for ordinary FM air-checking, 9.5 cm/s is enough to obtain sufficient quality.
