A 6-page fold-out brochure for the DENON PMA-αSA1 - the successor to the PMA-αS1 twelve years on, now under an extended series name: αSensitive & Advanced (spelled out right on the cover). The unit looks visibly different: the 1990s gold front panel has been replaced by a silver-titanium finish, the heatsinks are exposed on top, and the graphics are cooler and more austere. The cover places the unit against green-gold mountains in morning mist - the αSensitive nature-photography language is still there, just with a colder palette. The new slogan reads “求めたのは、リアリティ” - “what we sought was reality” - and the spread inside adds “the true value of audio asked of in the multichannel era” (a quiet remark that pure stereo in 2006 is a deliberate choice in a market overrun by AV receivers). The circuit lineage from the αS1 of 1994 is direct: the same UHC-MOS Single Push-Pull output stage and the same INVERTED Σ BALANCE Circuit as the signature balanced topology. New in 2006: cascode bootstrap connection for the UHC-MOS (unlocking the potential of the large-current devices), a fully balanced amplifier from input to output, Precision Signal Ground with CD direct mode, a premium 50-type volume potentiometer in a brass housing, and a large-current Lc balanced series relay for the input selector. The chassis is a super-rigid construction with a 6 mm aluminium top plate, a precision-cast front panel and multi-layer heavyweight insulator feet. Connectivity gains a NETWORK input (a nod to the network-audio era) while keeping PHONO MM, BALANCED XLR, CD, TUNER, SACD/CD, DVD/VCR, two TAPE loops with REC OUT and two SPEAKER pairs. The numbers: 50 + 50 W into 8 Ω (same as 1994), but THD drops from 0.007% to 0.005%, SNR is 105 dB on LINE and BALANCED, weight is up to 30 kg (from 25.5 on the αS1), depth 508 mm. Price ¥400,000 before tax - exactly the same as the αS1 in 1994, twelve years on: DENON holds the flagship price, but for the same money delivers a heavier, more refined and more contemporary machine.
